My name is Michael Schut. I grew up in Michigan, but have lived in Northern Virginia for two years. I am a Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor (CADC) through the Virginia Certification Board and nationally through the IC&RC. I have completed Peer Recovery Training. I was previously certified as a Peer Support Specialist in the state of Georgia.
I currently work in a peer recovery role for the Fairfax County Department of Family Services. Prior to that, I worked as a counselor for the Fairfax/Falls Church CSB detox facility in Chantilly, Virginia, as a counselor at a drug court in Gainesville, Georgia, and as a counselor for a small private inpatient/outpatient facility in Athens, Georgia. I also received many of my CADC hours volunteering at a large inpatient drug treatment facility for homeless men in Jefferson, Georgia.
I am in recovery from alcoholism, and have been sober over six years. I have also learned to live with and successfully navigate bouts of depression and anxiety. I was less successful dealing with a loved one who suffered from borderline personality disorder and ended her life as a result. This experience, both successful and unsuccessful, fuels my desire to learn Personal Medicine and to coach others. I hope to add tools to my toolbox and arrows to my quiver! I just want to improve as a peer helper.
